ADYASHANTI is a well-known American spiritual teacher and also the author from the San Francisco Bay Area. He offers talks, online study courses, and retreats within the United States and abroad. Adya is the author of numerous books, CDs, and DVDs and, together with his wife Mukti, the founder of Open Gate Sangha, Inc., which is a nonprofit organization established in 1996 which supports and makes available his teachings.
Adya’s teachings contain evening meetings, weekend intensives, live internet broadcasts, silent retreats, and online courses. He also taught throughout the US, Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, and Australia. Over 30,000 people in 120 countries are connected to his website through a free email subscription. He is the author of eight books.
At the age of 20, Adya began studying Zen Buddhism under the guidance of Arvis Joen Justi, whose teacher was Taizan Maezumi Roshi. During that time, he also attended long retreats with Jakusho Kwong Roshi, which is a disciple of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, at the Sonoma Mountain Zen Center. While working at his father’s machine shop, he then created a meditation hut in his parent’s backyard and began meditating two to four hours a day.
Today, Adyashanti offers teachings that are free of any tradition or ideology. He says, “The Truth I point to is not confined within any religious point of view, belief system, or doctrine.” His teachings are an open invitation to stop, inquire, and recognize what is true and liberating at the core of all existence.
